The 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup marked the final chapter of a storied international tournament.
In short: Before the 2018 World Cup, Russia hosted eight national teams for a high-stakes dress rehearsal. This event served as the swan song for the Confederations Cup, a quadrennial competition that FIFA ultimately retired to prioritize the expansion of the Club World Cup and other regional tournaments.
Held from June 17 to July 2, 2017, the tournament functioned as a precursor to the main World Cup event. Russia secured hosting rights in December 2010, utilizing four venues across Saint Petersburg, Moscow, Kazan, and Sochi. The competition featured the host nation, the reigning World Cup champions, and the six winners of continental championships. Germany, having claimed the 2014 World Cup title, secured their spot early, while other participants like Australia, Chile, Mexico, New Zealand, Portugal, and Cameroon qualified through their respective regional successes.
The tournament structure involved a group stage followed by a knockout phase, culminating in a final match at the Krestovsky Stadium. Germany emerged victorious, defeating Chile 1–0 to claim their only title in the competition's history. This edition was notable for being the first to implement video assistant referee technology. It also saw a unique demographic milestone, as it was the first time three teams from the same confederation—Russia, Germany, and Portugal from UEFA—competed in the same tournament.
Beyond the pitch, the event introduced logistical innovations for spectators, including the mandatory FAN ID system. This document provided stadium access and allowed foreign visitors visa-free entry into Russia for a window spanning ten days before the opening match and ten days after the final. While the event successfully showcased Russian infrastructure, FIFA opted to fold the tournament afterward. The decision aimed to clear the calendar for the Club World Cup expansion and the FIFA Arab Cup, effectively ending a competition that had been a staple of the international football cycle since its inception.
