In short: The 2020–21 NFL playoffs broke long-standing records and introduced new formats. From the first team to host a Super Bowl at home to the end of historic playoff streaks, the tournament unfolded under the unique constraints of a global pandemic.

The 2020 season introduced significant structural changes to the NFL postseason. For the first time since 2001, the league expanded the tournament from 12 to 14 teams by adding a third wild card spot to each conference. This expansion extended the Wild Card round from two games to three per day. Throughout the tournament, local health restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic limited stadium attendance, though the league maintained contingency plans to delay the postseason or even move the Super Bowl to as late as February 28 if outbreaks occurred. Owners also considered a 16-team format without byes if regular season games were cancelled. These measures ensured the league could adapt to evolving health crises.

The tournament was notable for ending several significant droughts. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who had not reached the postseason since 2007, and the Cleveland Browns, who had not appeared since 2002, both qualified. In contrast, the New England Patriots failed to reach the playoffs for the initial time since 2008, snapping the NFL's most enduring postseason run. Meanwhile, the New York Jets held the longest active playoff drought, having not appeared since 2010. The Buffalo Bills also ended a long absence by securing their first postseason win since 1995. This victory came during a high-scoring clash against the Indianapolis Colts.

The postseason culminated in Super Bowl LV on February 7, 2021, at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 31–9. Such a landmark event represented the first instance of a club competing in the Super Bowl on their home turf. The Buccaneers reached the championship game after winning three consecutive playoff games on the road. The victory occurred at Raymond James Stadium. This win marked a significant milestone for the franchise.
