In short: The 2019–20 NFL playoffs served as a historic crossroads, marking the end of the Brady-Belichick dynasty while simultaneously dismantling the league's long-standing playoff structure. From overtime heartbreaks to record-breaking conference milestones, these games signaled a permanent shift in how football is played and organized.

The postseason served as a definitive closing chapter for one of sports' most dominant partnerships. In the AFC Wild Card Round, the Tennessee Titans eliminated the New England Patriots with a 20–13 victory. This marked the first time since 2010 that the Patriots failed to reach the AFC Championship and their first absence from the Super Bowl since 2015. Most notably, it was Tom Brady's final game in New England before signing with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, ending the historic Brady–Belichick era.

Simultaneously, the league underwent a structural transformation. The 2019–20 season was the final year of the 12-team playoff format and the last time the #2 seed in each conference received a first-round bye. To improve player safety and logistics for West Coast teams, the NFL also adjusted divisional game start times from their traditional slots to 3:05 and 6:40 p.m. (EST), which meant that visiting squads avoided East Coast fixtures starting at 10:00 a.m. (PST).

The tournament was defined by high-stakes drama and statistical anomalies. Never before had the NFL seen two wild card matches reach extra time—each concluded by just one point. The Houston Texans overcame a massive 16–0 third-quarter deficit to defeat the Buffalo Bills 22–19, while the Minnesota Vikings secured their first road playoff win since 2005 by defeating the New Orleans Saints 26–20 in overtime. Additionally, the Philadelphia Eagles became only the second team in history to face every opponent in their conference during a postseason.

The season concluded on February 2 with Super Bowl LIV at Hard Rock Stadium, where the Kansas City Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers 31–20.
