The first time an NRL Grand Final left Sydney's shores
In short: For over two decades, the NRL's ultimate prize remained anchored in Sydney. That changed on October 3, 2021, when a pandemic forced a historic relocation to Brisbane. It wasn't just a change of scenery; it was a collision of two distinct eras of Australian rugby league.
The 2021 NRL Grand Final saw the Penrith Panthers defeat the South Sydney Rabbitohs 14–12 at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane. This marked the first time the event was held outside of Sydney since 1999, a move necessitated by COVID-19 lockdowns in New South Wales. Because of government restrictions, the stadium was capped at seventy-five percent capacity, hosting 39,322 spectators.
The match pitted two clubs with deep working-class identities against one another. South Sydney represented the league's traditional blue-collar past, having won 20 premierships before the NRL's formation in 1998. In contrast, the Penrith Panthers were viewed as the modern embodiment of that same spirit, bolstered by a junior system renowned for producing elite talent from heavily industrial geographical districts.
The rivalry was nuanced by recent history and coaching pedigree. It was Wayne Bennett’s tenth Grand Final appearance as a coach, while Ivan Cleary sought his third. The Panthers were looking to secure their first title since 2003, following a regular season where they finished second with 21 wins. Meanwhile, the Rabbitohs—who scored 775 points during the season, the fourth-highest total in history—were chasing their 22nd premiership.
The game also served as a milestone for several individuals. It was the final match commentated by long-time announcer Ray Warren and saw Benji Marshall retire after 346 matches. Additionally, rookie Blake Taaffe became the least experienced player to ever feature in a Grand Final, having played only eight NRL games at the time of the match.
