How a season of heartbreak ended in a Rose Bowl victory
In short: The 2021 Ohio State Buckeyes season was defined by missed opportunities and unexpected turns. After failing to reach the Big Ten Championship or the College Football Playoff for the first time in years, the team found redemption in a high-scoring postseason classic.
Led by third-year head coach Ryan Day, the 2021 Buckeyes entered the season as a powerhouse, ranked No. 4. The campaign marked the program's 132nd season overall and its 109th as a member of the Big Ten Conference. However, the season was marked by significant setbacks in conference play. For the first time since 2016, the Buckeyes failed to reach the Big Ten Championship Game, and following losses to Michigan and No.
The season opener at Huntington Bank Stadium provided a glimpse of the offensive talent available. Facing the Minnesota Golden Gophers, the Buckeyes secured a 45–31 victory. Quarterback C.J. Stroud delivered a standout performance, completing 13 of 22 passes for 294 yards and four touchdowns. The game featured explosive plays, including a 70-yard touchdown run and pass by TreVeyon Henderson and a 56-yard touchdown reception by Garrett Wilson. Despite the win, the defense struggled, surrendering over 200 yards each in rushing and passing to Minnesota.
Despite the mid-season struggles, the Buckeyes concluded their year on a high note. They were invited to compete in the Rose Bowl, where they faced Utah in a thrilling 48–45 victory. This victory served as a final bright spot for a roster that included notable talents like Miyan Williams, who rushed for 127 yards in the season opener, and Justin Fields, who eventually declared for the NFL Draft.
