The highest-scoring Manchester derby in history reached a nine-goal fever pitch
In short: In October 2022, the fierce rivalry between Manchester United and Manchester City produced a statistical anomaly. A chaotic night of goals saw both sides trade blows in a match that redefined the scoring ceiling for one of football's most storied derbies.
The Manchester derby on October 2, 2022, stands as a landmark event in Premier League history due to its sheer volume of scoring. The match concluded with a total of nine goals, officially becoming the highest-scoring Manchester derby of all time. Manchester City dominated the first half, with Erling Haaland and Phil Foden each netting two goals to establish a commanding 4–0 lead.
Manchester United's comeback was spearheaded by Antony, who scored early in the second half. However, the scoring continued as both Haaland and Foden completed their hat-tricks. Anthony Martial eventually provided some late momentum, coming on to score two goals in the closing stages of the match.
This high-scoring affair occurred during a turbulent transitional period for United under manager Erik ten Hag. It was his first season in charge, characterized by significant roster shifts, including the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo in November 2022 and the debuts of players like Lisandro Martínez and Casemiro. The season also saw Marcus Rashford reach a milestone of 100 club goals during an October fixture against West Ham.
The derby's intensity was reflected in the broader context of the 2022–23 campaign, which included a trophy win in the EFL Cup—the club's first silverware since 2017—and a notable run of nine consecutive victories across all competitions. Despite these highs, the season was marked by historical lows, including a record-breaking streak of seven straight away defeats early on.
