How a pandemic-era sports league balanced safety with a floating schedule
In short: The 2022 AFL season was a logistical tightrope walk. Played as the pandemic's third year wound down, the league had to navigate vaccination mandates, sudden isolation outbreaks, and a radical new scheduling system designed to prioritize high-quality matchups over traditional dates.
The 2022 season marked a significant transition point for the Australian Football League. While the sport continued as the 126th season of competition, it was the final year directly shaped by the COVID-19 pandemic. By the time the season began in March, Australia's vaccination program was nearing completion, with 95% of adults having received two doses and roughly 50% boosted. Despite these numbers, the Omicron variant became the dominant strain in late 2021, leading to widespread community transmission and ongoing requirements for testing and isolation.
To manage these risks, the AFL implemented a mandatory vaccination policy for all players and staff. This sparked a notable controversy, resulting in the resignations of two players: Liam Jones from Carlton and Cam Ellis-Yolmen from the Brisbane Lions. The league eventually lifted its mandate in July. Furthermore, the league established a 'top-up' list, allowing clubs to nominate 20 players from state leagues to fill spots if a team fell below 28 available players due to illness. This was notably utilized by the West Coast Eagles twice due to strict isolation rules in Western Australia.
Logistically, the season introduced a 'floating fixture' from round 10 onwards. Instead of releasing the full calendar at once, the league kept dates fluid to ensure the most compelling matches occupied prime-time television slots. This era also saw record-breaking performances, such as Collingwood winning a league-high eleven games by margins of less than two goals. The season concluded with the Geelong Football Club securing their tenth premiership, defeating Sydney by 81 points in the Grand Final.
The season also saw historic individual and team milestones. Carlton became the first club since 1977 to finish in the top eight every week except for the final round while still missing the finals entirely. Meanwhile, Port Adelaide set a new record for the longest winless start to a season, failing to secure a victory in their first five games.
