How a mid-season quarterback change fueled a perfect 12–0 season
In short: In 2022, the Michigan Wolverines achieved a flawless 12–0 record and a Big Ten title. The campaign's momentum shifted dramatically after just two games, when a sophomore replacement stepped in to lead an offense that would eventually dominate the conference.
The 2022 season was defined by a pivotal transition at quarterback. Following the second matchup with Hawaii, sophomore J. J. took over the starting role from senior Cade McNamara. The newcomer made an instant difference, throwing three touchdowns and gaining 229 yards on 11 of 12 completions during his debut. His efficiency helped propel Michigan to a 12–0 overall record and a second consecutive Big Ten East Division title. The transition was marked by a high-octane start, including a 51–7 victory over Colorado State. During that opener, the team's defense recorded seven sacks and held their opponents to just 82 rushing yards.
The roster featured several standout individual performances that earned national recognition. Driving the offence, junior running back Blake Corum secured Big Ten MVP and Running Back of the Year titles, amassing 18 touchdowns and 1,463 rushing yards from 247 carries. On the defensive side, graduate transfer center Oluwatimi secured both the Outland and Rimington Trophies, while defensive end Mike Morris was named Big Ten Defensive Lineman of the Year. The offensive line's dominance was also recognized, as the unit earned the Joe Moore Award for the second year running. Additionally, kicker Jake Moody set several program records, including 29 field goals in a single season.
While the season was a triumph of consistency, it ended with a high-scoring heartbreak. After defeating Purdue in the Big Ten Championship Game, the Wolverines advanced to the College Football Playoff semifinals. However, their undefeated run ended on December 31 in the Fiesta Bowl, where they lost 51–45 to TCU. The post-season also brought significant instability to the sidelines, as several key coaches, including defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald and offensive coordinator Josh Gattis, departed the program. The coaching staff underwent a major reorganization in early 2023. This included the hiring of Jesse Minter as the new defensive coordinator and the promotion of Sherrone Moore to co-offensive coordinator.
