How the 2022 MLB Draft reshaped the landscape of professional baseball
In short: Held in Los Angeles from July 17–19, 2022, this draft was a pivotal moment for the league. It introduced complex compensation rules and set the stage for a massive overhaul in how amateur talent is distributed across the Major League Baseball landscape.
The 2022 draft was governed by a selection order determined by the reverse standings of the 2021 MLB season. This meant the Baltimore Orioles, having finished the previous year with the worst record, held the first overall pick and selected Jackson Holliday. However, the order was not purely based on performance; specific penalties and compensations altered the sequence for several clubs.
For instance, the Los Angeles Dodgers saw their top selection slide down 10 slots because they reached the third surcharge tier of the 2021 competitive balance tax threshold. Meanwhile, compensation picks were awarded to teams that failed to secure signings from the 2021 draft. The New York Mets earned the 11th pick after failing to sign Kumar Rocker, and the Boston Red Sox received the 41st pick following the non-signing of Jud Fabian.
This draft also occurred during a transformative period for labor relations. On March 10, 2022, MLB and the MLBPA agreed to a new collective bargaining agreement (CBA). This agreement laid the groundwork for significant structural changes starting in 2023, including the introduction of a draft lottery for the 18 non-postseason teams and a permanent reduction of the draft to 20 rounds. It also introduced a guarantee for draftees to receive 75% of their slot value, provided they undergo pre-draft physicals.
Zach Neto's arrival in the majors occurred on April 15, 2023, with the Los Angeles Angels, marking him as the initial member of the 2022 class to debut in MLB.
