A season of record-breaking debuts and sudden coaching shifts for Michigan
In short: The 2025 Michigan Wolverines season was defined by extremes. From freshman quarterback Bryce Underwood setting debut records to the sudden firing of head coach Sherrone Moore, the campaign was a whirlwind of high-stakes victories and unexpected administrative upheaval.
The 2025 campaign saw the Wolverines finish with a 9–4 record, outscoring their opponents 331 to 224. While the team maintained a high level of play, the season was marked by significant volatility. Head coach Sherrone Moore, in his second and final year at the helm, was fired for cause on December 10 after the university disclosed an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. Following his dismissal, associate head coach Biff Poggi took over as interim head coach for the Citrus Bowl, a game Michigan lost 41–27 to Texas.
On the field, the season was headlined by the emergence of freshman quarterback Bryce Underwood. During his August 30 outing versus New Mexico, Underwood established a new school benchmark for freshman quarterbacks in their first appearance, throwing for 251 yards and beating Tate Forcier's 2009 mark of 179 yards. Underwood's performance was a cornerstone of the offense, also recording 2,428 passing yards and 17 total touchdowns over the season.
The Wolverines' offensive production was bolstered by standout performances from running back Justice Haynes and wide receiver Andrew Marsh. After gaining 159 yards during his first game, Haynes joined the list of Michigan athletes to exceed 100 rushing yards in each of his opening four matches. Marsh contributed 45 receptions for 651 yards, while linebacker Jimmy Rolder led the defense with 73 total tackles. Despite these individual achievements, the season included a notable loss to No. 1 Ohio State in the regular season finale, a game that drew 18.4 million viewers—the highest for any regular-season game in 2025.
