The only Asian Cup held in an even-numbered year
In short: Logistics and climate forced a radical shift in the football calendar. Because of extreme summer heat and a scheduling conflict, the 2023 AFC Asian Cup was pushed back by a full year. This move created a unique historical anomaly: it is the only edition since 2007 not held in an odd-numbered year.
Originally, China was awarded the hosting rights in June 2019. However, the tournament was relocated to Qatar in October 2022 after China relinquished its rights due to the COVID-19 pandemic and its Zero-COVID policy. This transition was complex; the AFC had to conduct a second round of bidding involving Australia, Indonesia, Qatar, and South Korea. Australia and Indonesia eventually withdrew, leaving Qatar as the host.
The move to Qatar also necessitated a one-year postponement. To avoid the high summer temperatures and a conflict with the CONCACAF Gold Cup, the tournament was rescheduled from its original 2023 dates to run from 12 January to 10 February 2024. While the dates shifted, the tournament retained its '2023' branding for sponsorship and logistical consistency. This marked the first time a nation that had previously hosted the FIFA World Cup hosted the AFC Asian Cup.
The tournament featured 24 national teams, including Tajikistan as the sole debutant. It was a landmark event for technology, as the AFC became the first confederation to apply Semi-Automated Offside Technology (SAOT) at the continental men's national team level across all 51 matches. The competition concluded with Qatar successfully defending their title by defeating Jordan 3–1 in the final held at Lusail Stadium.
The event also served as a cultural milestone, featuring an anime-inspired mascot family of jerboas and the first time a woman, Yoshimi Yamashita, refereed an AFC Asian Cup. Despite the logistical hurdles of the postponement, the tournament maintained a high scoring average of 2.59 goals per match across its 51 fixtures.
