In short: The 2024–25 season marked a historic transformation for Asia's top club football. Beyond a simple name change, the AFC Champions League Elite introduced a revamped league structure and a high-stakes format designed to redefine the continent's premier competition.

The 2024–25 edition represented the 43rd iteration of Asia's premier club tournament, but it was also the first to operate under the rebranded AFC Champions League Elite identity. This transition brought a significant structural shift: a brand new league phase featuring 24 teams, each competing in eight matches against various opponents. The allocation of slots for various associations was determined by club competition rankings that were finalized following the conclusion of the 2022 season.

The competition's path to the title was rigorous. While 22 teams entered the league stage directly, two additional participants earned their spots by winning play-off rounds representing the West and East Regions. The tournament's knockout phase narrowed the field to 16 teams, split evenly with eight clubs in each region. Notably, the defending champions, Al-Ain, were unable to maintain their status, falling during the league stage. The tournament's preliminary round featured two teams, while the play-off round involved four clubs, including the winner from the preliminary stage.

Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, hosted the tournament's concluding matches. Between 25 April and 3 May 2025, a single location hosted one-off matches for the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final. This intense period concluded with Al-Ahli emerging as the champions. Beyond gaining continental status, their win granted participation in the 2025 FIFA Intercontinental Cup and 2029 FIFA Club World Cup, plus automatic entry into next year's league phase. The knockout stage's first legs were contested between 3 and 5 March 2025, with the second legs following from 10 to 12 March.
