The end of an era: Nick Saban’s final season with Alabama
In short: In 2023, the Alabama Crimson Tide faced a season of profound transition. Amidst a championship run and a dominant regular season, the program prepared for the departure of its most legendary leader, marking the conclusion of a seventeen-year dynasty.
The 2023 season was a landmark year for the University of Alabama, representing the program's 129th overall season and its 32nd and final year within the SEC Western Division. While the team entered the year as a preseason favorite, ranked No. 4, the campaign was marked by volatility. Early struggles, including a loss to Texas and a narrow victory over South Florida, saw the Crimson Tide drop to No. 13 in the rankings. However, the team demonstrated remarkable resilience, winning nine consecutive games to finish the regular season with an 11–1 record and an 8–0 conference record.
The season's pinnacle arrived at the SEC Championship Game, where Alabama faced the Georgia Bulldogs in a rematch of their 2021 encounter. In a high-stakes battle, Alabama secured a 27–24 victory, claiming its 11th SEC title and simultaneously halting Georgia's formidable 29-game winning streak. This victory earned the Tide a spot in the College Football Playoff alongside Texas, though their journey ended in the 2024 Rose Bowl with a 27–20 overtime loss to the eventual national champion, Michigan.
Beyond the field, the season was defined by the retirement of head coach Nick Saban. On 10 January, Saban declared his retirement, just one day after the concluding season rankings were published on 9 January 2024. His seventeen-year tenure left an indelible mark on the sport, characterized by an extraordinary 188–27 record and six national championships in 2009, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2017, and 2020. The conclusion of his era left the program facing significant roster turnover, having lost 45 players during the off-season through graduation, NFL departures, and the transfer portal.
