A new era begins for Alabama football following the retirement of Nick Saban
In short: After seventeen years of unprecedented dominance and six national titles, the Alabama Crimson Tide entered their 130th season facing a profound identity shift. With the departure of legendary coach Nick Saban, the program transitioned to the leadership of Kalen DeBoerms amidst a massive roster overhaul.
The 2024 season marked a historic turning point for the University of Alabama. For nearly two decades, the program was defined by the tenure of Nick Saban, who coached the team from 2007 through the 2023 season. Under his leadership, the Crimson Tide achieved a remarkable .874 winning percentage, accumulating 201 wins and only 29 losses, while securing six national championships in 2009, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2017, and 2020. This 130th overall season for the program also marked its 91st year competing within the Southeastern Conference. The team continues to host its home matches at Bryant–Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa.
The transition to head coach Kalen DeBoer was complicated by significant roster volatility. Following the 2023 season, 41 Alabama players entered the NCAA Transfer Portal. While the program successfully integrated thirteen new players from the portal—earning a No. 3 ranked transfer class according to 247 Sports—the roster also saw departures, including Julian Sayin, Peyton Woodyard, and Jameer Grimsley, who left the program after signing but before the 2024 season began. Despite the influx of new talent, the program faced setbacks when certain recruits like Jameer Grimsley and others departed the roster. This period of change was reflected in the heavy media presence during the July 2024 SEC Media Days in Dallas.
Preparation for this new era included a rigorous spring schedule, featuring 15 practices between March 8 and March 17, 2024. This culminated in the annual 'A-Day' spring game on April 13, 2024, where the Crimson team defeated the White team 34–28. As the team prepared for its 91st year in the Southeastern Conference, the spotlight remained on key figures like quarterback Jalen Milroe and offensive lineman Tyler Booker during the SEC Media Days in July 2024. During the media event at the Omni Hotel, Malachi Moore also represented the team alongside other key starters. The preseason rankings for the squad were officially made public in July 2024.
