Can the Washington Commanders break their five-year drought in 2026?
In short: Following a difficult 5–12 campaign marked by injuries, the Washington Commanders enter their 95th NFL season with a fresh identity. With new uniforms and a revamped coaching staff, the franchise is looking to reclaim its dominance in the NFC East.
The 2026 season represents a pivotal moment of transition for the Washington Commanders. Now in their third season led by head coach Dan Quinn and GM Adam Peters, the squad aims to recover from last year's disappointing 5–12 finish. This period has been characterized by significant personnel shifts, particularly within the coaching hierarchy. The club parted ways with defensive coordinator Joe Whitt Jr. and offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury after the 2025 campaign. To fill these vacancies, the team promoted assistant quarterbacks coach David Blough to offensive coordinator and brought in Daronte Jones, formerly of the Minnesota Vikings, to lead the defense.
Beyond the sidelines, the franchise is also undergoing a visual transformation. During the 2026 offseason, the Commanders unveiled new uniforms that draw inspiration from their Super Bowl era designs. This new look includes a black alternate kit featuring an alternative logo with a spear. These changes come as the team seeks to end a five-year drought of NFC East titles and return to the playoffs after a one-year absence.
The road to success remains complicated by recent struggles. The team's momentum has been hampered by injuries, such as the dislocated elbow sustained by quarterback Jayden Daniels during the final minute of a first half. Furthermore, the team faces persistent divisional challenges, including a streak of five consecutive seasons failing to sweep the Dallas Cowboys. As the 2026 schedule unfolds, the franchise remains focused on rebuilding the stability that defined its most successful eras.
