How a Super Bowl favorite collapsed after a dominant 7–4 start
In short: Entering the 2025 season as media-backed Super Bowl favorites, the Detroit Lions appeared unstoppable. After winning seven of their first eleven games, a sudden late-season spiral saw them lose six of their final seven, ultimately ending their playoff hopes on Christmas Day.
The 2025 Detroit Lions season, the franchise's 96th in the NFL, began with immense promise under the leadership of head coach and general manager Dan Campbell and executive Brad Holmes. Following a historic 15–2 campaign the previous year, the Lions were widely tipped by media experts to win the Super Bowl. Their early success was notable, including a massive 52–21 victory over the Chicago Bears and a historic road win against the Baltimore Ravens—their first in Baltimore since 1977.
However, the momentum shifted during a grueling stretch of the schedule. While the team achieved milestones, such as Jake Bates tying a franchise record with a 59-yard field goal against the New York Giants, they were simultaneously plagued by injuries and departures in the secondary and offensive line. This instability led to a devastating loss to the Minnesota Vikings on Christmas Day. In that Week 17 matchup, the Lions committed a season-high six turnovers, a staggering figure considering they had entered the game with only eight total turnovers for the entire season.
The collapse was characterized by narrow margins; five of their eight losses that year were decided by a touchdown or less. The season's end was marked by a lack of consistency in high-pressure moments, such as a blocked field goal attempt in Week 9 and a 0-for-5 fourth-down conversion rate against the Philadelphia Eagles. The Lions' postseason hopes ended officially for the first time since 2022 as the campaign drew to a close.
