The Detroit Lions achieved a historic 15–2 regular season record
In short: In a season defined by offensive dominance, the Detroit Lions rewrote the franchise record books. From an undefeated road campaign to a historic division sweep, the 2024 Lions achieved milestones that had eluded the organization for decades, even as they faced devastating defensive injuries.
A record-breaking 15–2 tally defined the Detroit Lions' 2024 campaign, representing a new high for the club. This performance tied them with the Kansas City Chiefs for the most wins in the league that year. The Lions became the first team in franchise history to complete an undefeated road campaign and secured their second consecutive NFC North title. Their dominance within the division was unprecedented; they swept the NFC North, marking the best single-season division performance in NFL history by combined winning percentage and the first time a Lions team had achieved such a sweep.
The engine of this success was a high-powered offense that led the NFL with 564 total points scored. Averaging 33.2 points per game, the unit recorded the 12th-highest scoring average since the AFL-NFL merger. This offensive surge was anchored by a prolific running back tandem of Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery, the latter of whom contributed to a league-leading 20 touchdowns before suffering an injury. The team's efficiency was further evidenced by a +222 point differential, the highest in the NFL in 2024.
However, the season was not without significant hardship. The campaign was marred by severe defensive injuries, most notably to Pro Bowl defensive end Aidan Hutchinson, who suffered a broken tibia and fibula during a Week 6 victory against the Dallas Cowboys. Despite finishing the regular season with the 7th fewest points allowed, these setbacks contributed to a shocking 45–31 playoff loss to the Washington Commanders in the Divisional Round. By losing, the Lions joined a significant pattern: the sixth straight squad with 15 wins to miss out on the Super Bowl title.
