How the 2025 Duke Blue Devils rewrote their football history in a single season
In short: Under head coach Manny Diaz, the 2025 Duke Blue Devils achieved a historic breakthrough. After securing a conference championship and a victory in the Sun Bowl, the team finished with a 9-5 record, marking their most significant success in decades and reclaiming dominance within their state and the Atlantic Coast Conference.
The 2025 season served as a transformative period for the Duke University football program. Competing in the Atlantic Coast Conference, the team navigated a challenging regular season to finish with seven wins and five losses. Despite this modest overall start, their conference performance was exceptional, resulting in a six-win, two-loss record that placed them at the top of a crowded five-way tie for second place. This positioning secured their entry into the ACC championship game, a stage they had never previously conquered.
In a dramatic championship showdown, the Blue Devils faced the Virginia Cavaliers. Duke emerged victorious in overtime, clinching their first conference crown in thirty-six years and their first outright league title since 1962. This victory was particularly meaningful as it represented the program's inaugural win in the ACC championship game since the event was established. Beyond the conference accolades, the team maintained local supremacy by sweeping their Tobacco Road rivals, successfully defending the Old State Trophy for the second consecutive year.
The momentum continued into the postseason at the Sun Bowl. Facing the Arizona State Sun Devils, Duke engaged in a high-scoring offensive battle that ultimately pushed their final season record to 9-5. This performance under Manny Diaz, who was in his second year as head coach, solidified the team's standing in Durham, North Carolina. By winning both the conference title and their bowl game, the 2025 squad effectively ended a long championship drought, proving that the program could compete at the highest levels of the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision.
