How Vanderbilt achieved its first 10-win season in program history
In short: After decades of struggle, the Vanderbilt Commodores have undergone a historic resurgence. From a dominant start to a top-ten ranking, the 2025 season has rewritten the school's record books, proving that even in the powerhouse SEC, unexpected dominance is possible.
The 2025 Vanderbilt Commodores season, led by head coach Clark Lea in his fifth year, has been defined by historic milestones. The team achieved a 10–2 regular season record, marking the first time in the program's history that they have reached 10 wins. This success was fueled by a sequence of high-profile victories, including a 31–7 win over No. 11 South Carolina that snapped a 16-game losing streak against the Gamecocks and a 17–10 victory over No. 15 Missouri.
The team's momentum carried them into the national spotlight, securing two appearances on College GameDay—the first season in school history to feature multiple appearances. Their rise was so significant that after defeating No. 10 LSU, Vanderbilt earned an AP poll ranking of No. 10. This was their first appearance in the top ten since the 1947 season. This surge also marked their best start since 1950, when the team began 6–1.
Beyond the field, the program has seen significant shifts in talent and recruitment. In late 2024, quarterback Diego Pavia announced his return to the team following a 7–6 season and a victory in the Birmingham Bowl. By December 2, 2025, the program secured a massive recruiting win when five-star quarterback Jared Curtis, previously committed to Georgia, decided to join Vanderbilt. This signing represents the most highly-ranked recruit in the school's history.
Despite being predicted to finish 13th in the SEC preseason poll on July 18, 2025, the Commodores defied expectations. They maintained a strong presence at FirstBank Stadium in Nashville, drawing an average home attendance of 34,813 spectators.
