A historic championship run for the Las Vegas Aces
In short: The 2025 WNBA playoffs featured a rare convergence of dominance and disruption. While the Las Vegas Aces secured their third title, a new expansion franchise made history by reaching the postseason in their very first year, marking a significant shift in the league's competitive landscape.
The 2025 postseason, which ran from September 14 to October 10, was defined by both established dynasties and unprecedented debuts. The Las Vegas Aces extended their dominance by securing their third championship, continuing a remarkable streak that included their seventh consecutive postseason appearance—the longest active streak in the league. In contrast, the Los Angeles Sparks faced a challenging period, missing the playoffs for a fifth consecutive season, the longest active drought in the WNBA.
The tournament also showcased the immediate impact of expansion. In their debut year, the Golden State Valkyries set a WNBA record as the initial expansion franchise to reach the playoffs. Their path was difficult; despite a strong start in the first round, they were eliminated by the top-seeded Minnesota Lynx. The Valkyries' seeding was decided by a complex tiebreaker involving their record against teams with a .500 or better winning percentage, as they were tied with the Seattle Storm in their regular-season series.
The competitive density of the 2025 field was notable for its parity. For the first time since 2011, every team that qualified for the playoffs held a winning record. This era of high-level competition saw intense battles in the first round, such as the Phoenix Mercury's tiebreaker victory over the New York Liberty to secure the fourth seed, and the Indiana Fever's hard-fought series win against the Atlanta Dream. The postseason also introduced a structural change to the league's highest stage, with the WNBA Finals adopting a best-of-seven format for the first time.
