How the AFC is reshaping the future of Asian women's club football
In short: The 2026–27 AFC Women's Champions League marks only the third edition of this premier tournament. With a complex ranking system and a high-stakes knockout format, the competition is designed to crown the continent's ultimate club powerhouse through a rigorous test of skill and discipline.
The tournament structure for the 2026–27 season relies on a sophisticated allocation system. Participation is determined by the AFC Women's Club ranking, a metric derived from a blend of 70% AFC club points and 30% national team points from the FIFA Women's World Ranking. While the defending champions receive direct entry into the group stage, the remaining slots are distributed based on the standing of member associations. The top five ranked associations earn direct group stage berths, while others must navigate a preliminary stage held in centralized venues.
Once the competition reaches the group stage, 12 teams are divided into three groups of four. The tournament follows a strict points-based ranking system, where wins earn three points and draws earn one. In the event of a tie, officials apply a hierarchy of tiebreakers, beginning with head-to-head results, followed by goal difference and goals scored within those specific matchups. If a tie persists among a subset of teams, the head-to-head criteria are reapplied exclusively to that group. In rare instances involving only two tied teams that played each other in their final group match, a penalty shoot-out may decide the ranking.
The knockout phase transitions into a single-leg format. The three top group finishers and the strongest runner-up will act as hosts and receive seeding for the quarter-finals. To ensure variety, teams from the same group cannot be drawn against one another in this stage. The tournament culminates in the semi-finals and the final, both of which are held at a single centralized location to determine the continental champion.
