The end of the halving rule in Austrian football
In short: For years, the Austrian Bundesliga utilized a unique points system that halved scores before the final phase. Starting in the 2026–27 season, this practice ends. This shift fundamentally changes how teams approach the regular season, as every point earned now carries its full weight into the championship.
The 2026–27 Austrian Football Bundesliga marks the 115th season of top-tier football in the country. It serves as a pivotal transition point for the league's structural mechanics, specifically regarding how points are aggregated. For the first time since the 2018–19 season, the league will no longer halve the points accumulated during the regular season before the championship or relegation rounds begin.
This change means that points will be carried over in full, a move that rewards consistency throughout the long season. It alters the strategic landscape for clubs, as a dominant performance in the early stages of the competition now provides a more direct and substantial advantage in the final stages. LASK enters this new era as the defending champion, having secured their second title in the preceding year.
The league's composition is also in flux. Blau-Weiß Linz will be absent from the top flight, having finished in last place during the 2025–26 Relegation Round to end a three-year stint in the first division. Austria Lustenau secured a rapid ascent back to the elite division, having won the 2025–26 Austrian Football Second League title merely two years following their drop from the top flight.
The season is scheduled to run from 1 August 2026 until 17 May 2027. While the structural rules are changing, the league continues to operate under FIFA eligibility rules regarding national team flags, acknowledging that players may hold multiple non-FIFA nationalities.
