A new era begins for the Atlanta Falcons in 2026
In short: After years of middling results, the Atlanta Falcons are entering a period of radical transformation. With a new coaching staff, a legendary quarterback returning to the front office, and a fresh visual identity, the franchise is attempting to break a nearly decade-long championship drought.
The 2026 season marks the 61st in the franchise's NFL history and represents a total overhaul of the team's leadership. Following the 2025 season, the organization moved on from head coach Raheem Morris and general manager Terry Fontenot. In their place, the Falcons have assembled a new executive suite, headlined by the return of franchise icon Matt Ryan. On January 10, 2026, Ryan was appointed president of football, bringing veteran stability to the front office.
The coaching staff has also seen a significant shift. On January 17, the team announced Kevin Stefanski as their new head coach. This marks Stefanski's second head coaching role in the NFL, following a six-year tenure with the Cleveland Browns from 2020 to 2025. Accompanying him is Ian Cunningham, who was named general manager on January 29, 2026. This leadership group faces the immediate challenge of improving upon the 8–9 record the team posted during the previous two seasons.
Beyond the sidelines, the team is looking to shed its recent past. The Falcons are currently navigating a nine-year drought without an NFC South title and are seeking their first playoff appearance in eight years. To signal this fresh start, the team unveiled new uniforms on April 2, 2026, ending a six-season run with their previous kit. As the season progresses, the team's schedule will include a notable moment in Week 13, when Stefanski will return to Cleveland for his first game against the team that fired him.
