How Auburn rebuilt its roster through the chaos of the transfer portal
In short: After losing thirty-seven players to the transfer portal following the 2025 season, the Auburn Tigers faced a massive rebuilding task. Yet, through strategic recruitment, head coach Alex Golesh managed to assemble one of the nation's most highly-ranked incoming transfer classes.
The 2026 Auburn Tigers football season began under a period of significant roster volatility. Following the conclusion of the 2025 season, the program saw thirty-seven players elect to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal. This mass exodus presented a daunting challenge for first-year head coach Alex Golesh, who was tasked with maintaining the competitive standards of the Southeastern Conference (SEC).
To stabilize the squad, Auburn engaged in an intensive recruitment drive during the offseason. The program successfully added thirty-nine players via the transfer portal, effectively offsetting the departures. This influx of talent was highly regarded by industry analysts; according to 247Sports, Auburn secured the No. 13 ranked transfer class in the entire country.
Preparation for the season was visible during the spring sessions, which commenced on March 17. These practices, held three days a week, culminated in the annual 'A-Day' spring game on Saturday, April 18. The scrimmage provided a glimpse into the new-look roster, as Team White emerged victorious over Team Blue with a final score of 66–43.
Beyond the transfer portal, the 2026 season also highlighted the program's ability to develop professional-grade talent. The roster's strength was reflected in the NFL Draft, where five Auburn players were selected in 2026. As the team prepares to compete at Jordan–Hare Stadium in Auburn, Alabama, the focus remains on integrating these diverse groups of players into a cohesive unit.
