A season of upheaval: coaching shifts redefine the Big Ten landscape
In short: The 2026 Big Ten football season arrives amidst a whirlwind of coaching changes. From sudden dismissals for cause to strategic hires, the conference's 131st year of play is being shaped by massive leadership transitions across its 18-team roster.
As the Big Ten enters its third season with an 18-team, non-divisional scheduling format, the landscape of the conference has been fundamentally altered by a series of high-profile coaching departures. The transition to this larger structure follows a long history, marking the 131st season of play for the conference within the broader NCAA Division I FBS football season.
The end of 2025 saw significant instability at several major programs. The University of Michigan underwent a sudden leadership change on December 10, 2025, when head coach Sherrone Moore was fired for cause following evidence of an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. The Wolverines responded by hiring Utah's Kyle Whittingham on December 26, 2025, on a five-year contract, making him the program's 22nd head coach.
Other programs faced similar turbulence. Michigan State turned to Pat Fitzgerald—formerly of Northwestern—on December 1, 2025, after firing Jonathan Smith following a 4–15 two-year stretch. Penn State also moved on from James Franklin on October 12, 2025, after 12 seasons and a 104–45 record, eventually naming Iowa State's Matt Campbell as his successor on December 5, 2025. Meanwhile, UCLA replaced DeShaun Foster, who finished with a 5–10 record, with James Madison's Bob Chesney on December 6, 2025.
This era of expansion and movement is broadcast through a massive media network. The conference's television contracts with FOX, NBC, and CBS ensure games reach audiences via FOX, CBS, NBC, FS1, and the Big Ten Network, with streaming available on Fox One, Paramount+, and Peacock.
