A historic trade marks a new era for the Cincinnati Bengals
In short: The Cincinnati Bengals are breaking long-standing franchise traditions. By trading away their tenth overall pick, the team has signaled a bold new strategy. As they enter their eighth season under Zac Taylor, the squad aims to end a three-year playoff drought and reclaim dominance within the AFC North division.
The 2026 season represents a pivotal moment for the Cincinnati Bengals, marking their 57th campaign in the NFL and their 59th overall. Entering the year, the team faced significant pressure to reverse a downward trend, having struggled through a 6–11 record in the preceding season. The franchise was also looking to break a three-year playoff drought and end a streak of three consecutive seasons without winning the AFC North division.
A significant shift happened on 18 April, as the Bengals moved the 10th pick to the New York Giants to acquire defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence, setting a new club record. This move marked the first time in the team's history that they had traded a top-ten draft selection. This aggressive maneuvering was part of a broader period of roster restructuring, which also included acquiring quarterback Joe Flacco from the Cleveland Browns in exchange for a fifth-round pick.
Under the eighth season of head coach Zac Taylor, the team has navigated significant roster turnover. While the preseason ended with an undefeated record—the first such feat since 2006—the regular season has brought both momentum and setbacks. The team's return to the NFL International Series, their first appearance in that arena since 2019, highlights the league's expanding footprint, even as the squad works to overcome recent divisional struggles and injuries to key players like Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins.
