The first team to lose 100 games in four straight years
In short: Despite a record-breaking offensive explosion, the 2026 Colorado Rockies season was defined by a historic struggle. They became the first franchise in modern history to reach the century mark of losses for four consecutive seasons, mirroring a feat last achieved by the New York Mets in the mid-1960s.
The 2026 campaign marked the Rockies' 34th season in Major League Baseball and their 32nd at Coors Field. While they managed to improve upon a franchise-worst 43–119 record from the previous year, the team remained mired in a deep slump. They officially clinched their eighth consecutive losing season on August 27, 2026, and were eliminated from playoff contention for the second straight year on September 6. The team's leadership underwent a major shift during this period. Warren Schaefer was officially named the manager on November 24. He had served as the interim leader since May 11, 2025.
The statistical nadir was reached on September 22 with their 100th loss against the Diamondbacks. This milestone made them the first team since the New York Mets (who did so from 1962–65) to lose 100 games in four consecutive seasons. However, the season wasn't entirely devoid of highlights; on June 14, the Rockies set a franchise record by scoring 23 runs in a 23–9 victory over the Athletics at Las Vegas Ballpark. A notable offensive peak occurred in mid-June at Las Vegas Ballpark. This specific game against the Athletics saw a massive scoring outburst. It remains a high point for the franchise's history.
The season was also a period of massive organizational upheaval. Following the resignations of GM Bill Schmidt and assistant GM Zack Rosenthal, the team hired Josh Byrnes as the new general manager and Paul DePodesta—formerly of the Cleveland Browns—as president of baseball operations. A significant change in control occurred when a 40% minority interest was purchased by Penner Sports Group on April 10, 2026; this deal established Greg Penner and Carrie Walton Penner, who also co-own the Denver Broncos, as MLB's primary minority shareholders. The front office also brought in several new coaching roles. Ian Levin joined as assistant general manager from the Mets. Additionally, Brett Pill and Alon Leichman were hired to lead hitting and pitching instruction.
