Predicting the rise of Colorado's high-profile football program
In short: Despite the hype surrounding a high-profile head coach and a major conference move, analysts were surprisingly conservative about the Buffaloes' 2026 season. While the team entered the Big 12 with significant expectations, early projections suggested a long road to the top of the standings.
Competing within the Big 12 Conference, the University of Colorado Boulder's 2026 Buffaloes football squad is currently active. This transition marks a significant chapter for the program, which plays its home games at Folsom Field in Boulder, Colorado. The team is currently under the leadership of fourth-year head coach Deion Sanders, whose high-profile tenure has drawn national attention to the program's trajectory. The squad competes in the NCAA Division I FBS football season. They utilize the campus grounds for their home matches.
Despite the visibility of the coaching staff, early sentiment from analysts was grounded in caution. Because the Big 12 Conference discontinued its official media preseason poll in 2025, predictions relied on unofficial metrics. An unofficial poll conducted by Big 12 writers and sponsored by the Tulsa World projected the Buffaloes to finish in 15th place within the conference. This sentiment was mirrored by the USA Today Big 12 preseason poll, which also placed the team in 15th. The team held its spring game on April 11, 2026. This event took place at the Folsom Field venue.
The lack of early accolades further highlighted the uphill battle facing the team. During the preseason period, not a single Colorado player was named to the Big 12 all-conference team. These projections suggest that while the move to the Big 12 provides a larger stage, the team faced a significant gap between public perception and the early statistical reality of the 2026 season. The writers' poll was sponsored by the Tulsa World. These rankings reflect the preseason outlook for the conference.
