Chile's premier football competition enters its ninety-sixth season with new stakes for international play
In short: The 2026 Liga de Primera season brings significant shifts to Chilean football. While Coquimbo Unido defends their title, the introduction of the Copa de la Liga has restructured how clubs earn their spots in prestigious continental tournaments, altering the path to the Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana for top-performing teams.
The 2026 campaign, officially titled the Liga de Primera Mercado Libre for sponsorship reasons, spans from 30 January to 6 December 2026. This season marks the 96th iteration of the nation's highest football tier. Despite the structural adjustments, the league maintains its traditional double round-robin format, requiring each of the sixteen participating clubs to play thirty matchdays throughout the year.
The most notable changes involve how teams qualify for international competition. The league champion and the runner-up secure direct entry into the 2027 Copa Libertadores group stage. A new playoff system adds complexity for the third-place finisher, who must compete against the 2026 Copa Chile winner. The victor of this single match advances to the second stage of the Copa Libertadores, while the defeated side earns a spot in the 2027 Copa Sudamericana. Furthermore, the clubs finishing fourth through sixth in the league table earn automatic qualification for the 2027 Copa Sudamericana.
The league roster features two newcomers following the 2025 season. Universidad de Concepción rejoined the top flight after a five-year absence, having secured the Primera B title with a decisive 3–0 win against Deportes Copiapó on 1 November 2025. Joining them are Deportes Concepción, who achieved their first promotion in 17 years by winning the promotion play-off finals against Cobreloa on 7 December 2025. These clubs stepped in to replace Deportes Iquique, relegated after two seasons, and Unión Española, who dropped to the second tier after a 28-year tenure in the top division.
These modifications reflect a broader effort to integrate the new Copa de la Liga into the existing football calendar. By linking league performance directly to the Copa Chile outcomes, the governing bodies have created a high-stakes environment where every matchday impacts a club's international prospects for the following year. This system ensures that the final standings remain critical for teams aiming to represent Chile on the continental stage.
