Alabama's 2026 congressional map is being redrawn in real-time
In short: A Supreme Court ruling has cleared the path for Alabama to redraw its congressional map mid-decade. This shift has triggered a complex series of special primaries and legal battles, fundamentally altering the boundaries and political landscape for the state's seven U.S. House seats before the November 2026 election.
The push for redistricting followed a Supreme Court ruling that narrowed section 2 of the Voting Rights Act. This legal shift allowed Alabama Governor Kay Ivey to call a special legislative session to redraw the state's congressional map. Alabama received permission to initiate a new map after the Supreme Court removed a mid-decade redistricting ban on 11 May 2026. The process has been marked by significant legal friction. A panel of federal judges initially blocked the new map on May 26, but the state successfully appealed to the Supreme Court. On June 2, the high court overturned the panel's decision, officially permitting the use of the legislature-approved map. This change specifically impacts the 1st and 2nd districts.
For example, the 1st district was redrawn to focus on the southwestern Gulf coast, while the 2nd district was adjusted to include parts of the Wiregrass Region, moving away from majority Black areas of Mobile County. Because of these rapid changes, special primary elections were scheduled for August 11 in the 1st, 2nd, 6th, and 7th districts. These special primaries are unique because they involve no possible runoff elections. Interestingly, while the May 19 primary elections will still occur in the affected districts, those results will be nullified in favor of the special primary outcomes. This high-stakes maneuvering ensures that the 2026 election will be fought over boundaries that are still being actively contested and refined.
The 2026 election will be a massive logistical undertaking, coinciding with races for the U.S. Senate, governor, and various state and local offices. With incumbents like Shomari Figures and Mike Rogers facing different dynamics—some seeking reelection and others moving toward different offices—the redistricting serves as a primary mechanism for reshaping the state's political power structure.
