In short: The 2026 UFL season marks a dramatic pivot for the league. Following a major stake sale to Impact Capital, the league shifted from its original expansion plans to a strategic eight-team model, implementing aggressive rule changes and a controversial player redistribution process to revitalize the brand.

In July 2025, the UFL underwent a significant leadership shift when it sold a large minority stake to Impact Capital, a private equity fund owned by multibillionaire Mike Repole. Repole, the founder of a major sports drink brand, assumed control of the league's business operations with a vision to modernize the product. His strategy focused on creating more intimate environments, targeting attendance between 10,000 and 15,000 fans per game to avoid the 'COVID game' atmosphere caused by empty seats in larger stadiums.

This transition brought immediate upheaval. Repole paused an initial plan to expand to 10 teams, opting instead to maintain an eight-team league for 2026, with a long-term goal of reaching 16 teams by 2035. The restructuring included the relocation of several franchises. New teams were established in Columbus, Louisville, and Orlando, while existing teams like the Houston Roughnecks were rebranded as the Houston Gamblers. This reorganization involved a controversial player redistribution process where current coaches could not protect their existing talent, a move that prompted Birmingham quarterback J'Mar Smith to quit the league in protest.

To 'turbocharge offenses,' the league introduced several significant rule changes for the 2026 season. These included prohibiting the 'tush push' play, allowing a four-point field goal from the midfield line, and implementing a new kickoff structure. Additionally, the league moved toward year-long coaching contracts and adjusted roster sizes, setting regular-season rosters at 45 players. Under the current collective bargaining agreement, players earn a minimum of $6,400 per game, alongside various performance-based bonuses for players of the week, year, or MVP.
