In short: A.J. Hinch led the Houston Astros to their first World Series title in 2017, becoming one of the most successful managers in franchise history. Yet, following a massive scandal and a year-long suspension, he returned to the dugout with a unique twist: leading a rival team against the very squad he once commanded.

Hinch's managerial trajectory is marked by extreme highs and lows. In 2009, at just 34 years and 357 days old, he became the youngest manager in MLB history since Eric Wedge. His tenure with the Arizona Diamondbacks was brief and difficult, resulting in an 89–123 record—the lowest winning percentage for a non-interim manager in franchise history. However, his move to the Houston Astros in late 2014 sparked a historic turnaround.

Between 2017 and 2019, Hinch guided the Astros through one of their most successful eras, including a 2017 World Series victory and three seasons with over 100 regular-season wins (including a club-record 107 in 2019). Despite this success, his career was upended by an MLB investigation into a sign-stealing scandal. While Hinch admitted he did not approve of the methods used to decode signs, Commissioner Rob Manfred ruled that as the immediate supervisor, Hinch had no justification for failing to stop the practice.

The fallout was severe: Hinch received a one-year suspension—the second-most severe in baseball history for in-game misconduct—and was fired by owner Jim Crane. After his suspension ended in 2020, he took over as manager of the Detroit Tigers. In 2024, this narrative came full circle when Hinch led the Tigers to a wild card berth and faced his former Astros team in the postseason, making him only the third manager in MLB history to face a team he previously led to a championship.

Hinch's longevity is further evidenced by his milestone achievements. He reached 500 managerial wins in May 2019 and eventually recorded his 1,000th victory on June 29, 2026.
