How a high school injury couldn't stop this record-breaking running back
In short: A. J. Dillon, known as "Quadzilla," transformed from a high school player sidelined by a broken leg into a collegiate powerhouse. After setting massive rushing records at Boston College, he transitioned to the NFL, proving his durability and scoring ability across multiple professional seasons.
Born on May 2, 1998, Algiers Jameal William Dillon Jr. began his football journey at New London High School. Despite playing sparingly as a freshman, he moved to Lawrence Academy, where he became a dominant force. Even a broken leg during his senior year of high school could not halt his momentum, as he still managed 635 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns in just four games.
Dillon's collegiate career at Boston College was defined by historic production. He became the school's all-time rushing leader with 4,382 yards, achieved in just three seasons. His dominance was evident in his freshman year, where he rushed for 1,589 yards and 14 touchdowns, earning the ACC Rookie of the Year title. He also became the first player in Boston College history to record back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons.
Entering the NFL, Dillon was selected by the Green Bay Packers in the second round of the 2020 draft. His professional career has seen him navigate various roles, from a depth piece to a starter, and has included stints with the Philadelphia Eagles and the Carolina Panthers. Beyond the field, Dillon carries a significant athletic legacy; his grandfather, Thom Gatewood, was an All-American and captain at the University of Notre Dame.
His personal life is marked by deep connections to the communities he inhabits. He was the only person to ever receive the key to Door County, Wisconsin, and he married Gabrielle on June 25, 2022. In a notable coincidence, his first child was born on May 2, 2023, sharing the same birthday as Dillon himself.
