From high school standout to NFL standout: the rise of A. J. Epenesa
In short: Before he was a professional force in the NFL, A. J. Epenesa was a dual-sport phenom in Illinois. Dominating both football and track, his journey from a highly-rated recruit to a professional defensive end is a testament to elite athleticism and relentless work ethic.
Born on September 15, 1998, Andrew Jared Epenesa emerged from Edwardsville High School in Illinois as a rare talent, earning All-American honors in both football and track. His athletic pedigree is deeply rooted; his father, Eppy, moved from American Samoa to walk on to the Iowa football team. This connection influenced A. J.'s recruitment, leading him to commit to the Iowa Hawkeyes on January 17, 2016. He arrived in Iowa City as the highest-rated recruit to ever play for head coach Kirk Ferentz.
Epenesa's collegiate career was defined by immediate impact and rapid progression. After a standout freshman season, he recorded 11 sacks during his sophomore year, leading the Big Ten conference. By his junior year, he had amassed 11.5 sacks and 49 tackles, prompting him to forgo his senior season to enter the 2020 NFL Draft. Despite projections that placed him as high as the second overall pick, the Buffalo Bills selected him in the second round, 54th overall, signing him to a four-year, $5.877 million contract on May 7, 2020.
His professional tenure has been marked by significant physical and tactical evolution. During his rookie season, he dropped 20 pounds from his 280-pound college weight to adapt to his role. While he spent time as a rotational piece, he achieved career highs in 2022 with 6.5 sacks and 14 quarterback pressures. His versatility was further highlighted in 2023 when he intercepted Sam Howell for a 32-yard touchdown. Though a 2026 deal with the Cleveland Browns fell through after a physical, he signed with the Philadelphia Eagles on June 10, 2026.
