The only British sovereign to voluntarily resign the crown for the woman he loved.
In short: In 1936, King Edward VIII shocked the world by abdicating the throne after less than a year. His decision to marry Wallis Simpson, an American divorcée, triggered a constitutional crisis that pitted the monarch against the Church of England, the government, and the expectations of the entire British Empire.
Edward VIII ascended the throne on January 20, 1936, following the death of his father, King George V. By this time, the King had already developed a deep, controversial relationship with Wallis Warfield Simpson, an American socialite who had previously divorced a U.S. Navy lieutenant and was in the process of divorcing her second husband, Ernest Simpson. The British establishment, including the Church of England—of which Edward was the Supreme Governor—deemed a twice-divorced woman unsuitable as a prospective queen consort.
The crisis intensified as the King refused to end the relationship. While foreign newspapers reported on the affair extensively, the British press maintained a self-imposed silence until December 3, 1936, when the scandal finally broke. Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin rejected the King’s proposal for a morganatic marriage, which would have allowed him to remain king while denying his wife the status of queen. With no political support except from Winston Churchill, Edward concluded that he could not fulfill his duties without the woman he loved.
On December 10, 1936, Edward signed the instrument of abdication, becoming the only British sovereign to voluntarily resign the crown. His brother, George VI, succeeded him and granted him the title of Duke of Windsor. Edward and Wallis married in France on June 3, 1937. Despite the transition, the royal family refused to grant the new Duchess the rank of 'royal highness,' a slight that deeply wounded the former king. He spent the remainder of his life in exile, primarily in France, until his death in 1972.
