From rapid expansion to legal battles, the volatile history of Nigeria's largest airline
In short: Founded in 2014 by Allen Onyema, Air Peace quickly became West Africa's largest carrier. Yet, its rise has been shadowed by serious safety incidents, international diplomatic disputes, and a sprawling US federal indictment against its CEO for alleged money laundering and bank fraud, complicating its ambitious global expansion plans.
Air Peace was established in 2014 with the stated goal of creating economic opportunities for Nigerian youth. By 2018, it had secured the largest share of the domestic market. Its growth was marked by high-profile initiatives, such as the free evacuation of over 300 Nigerian citizens from South Africa during xenophobic violence in September 2019. However, the airline's operational record has been marred by a series of aviation incidents, primarily involving its Boeing 737 fleet, ranging from hard landings and runway excursions to engine failures.
The airline has faced significant regulatory scrutiny. In 2019, the Accident Investigation Bureau of Nigeria accused management of failing to report serious incidents and erasing cockpit voice recorders. Simultaneously, the US Department of Justice indicted CEO Allen Onyema on charges of money laundering and bank fraud, alleging he falsified documents to fund luxury purchases. Onyema has denied these claims, though his legal troubles expanded in October 2024 with additional charges of obstructing justice. In April 2021, maintenance issues forced the grounding of 17 aircraft, leaving only eight operational.
Despite these challenges, Air Peace continues to pursue international growth. A 2021 dispute with the UAE over flight slots nearly triggered a diplomatic crisis before being resolved. More recently, the airline has targeted a direct route to São Paulo, Brazil, following a 2025 bilateral agreement. While Brazil granted operational approval in June 2026, the airline has cautioned that no start date is set, emphasizing that it will not commence operations until all requirements are met. The airline's path forward remains tethered to both its commercial ambitions and the ongoing legal and safety challenges that have defined its first decade.
