In short: After developing in the Cork City academy, Alan Browne has navigated the complexities of professional football. From earning Player of the Year at Preston North End to securing a Premier League spot with Sunderland, his career illustrates the grit required to climb through the English leagues.

Born on 15 April 1995, Alan Browne's professional journey began in Ireland. After playing for Ringmahon Rangers, he joined the Cork City U19 squad before the 2012 season and graduated to the senior squad the following year. Although he appeared on the substitutes' bench for matches against Sligo Rovers and Drogheda United in 2013, he never made a first-team appearance for the club before his departure.

His move to England in January 2014 marked a significant turning point. Signing an 18-month contract with Preston North End, Browne made his debut on 25 March 2014 as a substitute in a 3–1 win over Peterborough United. His work ethic earned him early praise from manager Simon Grayson. By the 2017–18 season, Browne had become a central figure for Preston, scoring eight goals and winning the club's Player of the Year award.

Browne's leadership qualities were formally recognized when he was appointed club captain for the 2020–21 season, following the exit of Tom Clarke. After reaching a milestone of 400 appearances for Preston on 27 January 2024, he departed the club in July 2024 after rejecting a new three-year contract. This departure followed reports of disagreements with manager Ryan Lowe, who resigned shortly after the start of the 2024–2025 season.

Following his time at Preston, Browne joined Sunderland in July 2024. After Sunderland's promotion to the Premier League, he moved on a season-long loan to Middlesbrough on 1 September 2025. His impact was immediate; he scored his first goal for Middlesbrough on 4 January 2026 in a 4–0 victory over Southampton and was named the EFL Championship Player of the Month for January 2026.
