In short: He was a vital part of Everton’s 1984 FA Cup triumph, yet his true legacy lies in the dugout. From managing in the Premier League to scouting opposition for David Moyes, Alan Irvine has spent decades navigating the highs and lows of English football.

Born in Glasgow in 1958, Alan Irvine’s footballing journey began as a winger for Queen's Park, where he balanced his athletic career with studies to become a qualified insurance broker. His playing years saw him represent several prominent clubs, including Everton, Crystal Palace, Dundee United, and Blackburn Rovers. A significant highlight of his playing career was contributing to Everton's 1983–84 FA Cup victory, having scored in both the third and fifth rounds of that campaign.

Transitioning into coaching, Irvine established himself as a highly regarded developer of talent. During his time as academy director at Newcastle United and Blackburn Rovers, he was instrumental in the progression of players like Steven Taylor, Peter Ramage, and Damien Duff, the latter of whom has called Irvine the best coach he ever worked under. His managerial stints, however, brought the intense pressures of the professional game. He led Preston North End to the Championship play-offs in the 2007–08 season, earning Championship Manager of the Month honors in April 2009, but was eventually dismissed in late 2009.

Irvine's managerial path also included leading Sheffield Wednesday and West Bromwich Albion. At West Brom, he achieved a notable 4–0 victory over Burnley in 2014, but his tenure ended after seven months. Despite the volatility of management, Irvine has remained a vital figure in elite coaching circles, often serving as a trusted assistant to David Moyes at clubs like West Ham United. By 2025, his career came full circle as he returned to Everton to serve as assistant manager, continuing a professional relationship with the club that spans over four decades.
