Why LSU fans see a bitter rival that Alabama barely notices
In short: In the world of college football, some rivalries are defined by history, while others are shaped by perception. While LSU fans consider Alabama their most intense enemy, many in Alabama don't view the Tigers as a primary rival at all, preferring other traditional matchups.
The Alabama–LSU rivalry, often called the "First Saturday in November," has deep roots dating back to 1895. Alabama's initial dominance featured a 31–11–4 tally, yet the rivalry intensified throughout the previous forty years. The gap shrunk to 26–16–1 following Bear Bryant's departure from coaching in 1982. The intensity peaked during the "Saban Bowl" era starting in 2007, when Alabama hired Nick Saban after he led LSU to a National Championship.
The rivalry is marked by unique geographical and statistical anomalies. Despite being high-profile opponents, only 42% of games have been won by the home state team (excluding ties). Furthermore, while Alabama has dominated in Baton Rouge with a 30–10–2 record, they have struggled significantly on their own turf since 1981, going just 9–12 at home. This disparity is reflected in fan sentiment: a 2009 poll revealed that over 60% of LSU fans ranked Alabama as their most bitter rival, whereas Alabama fans prioritized the Iron Bowl against Auburn and the matchup with Tennessee.
The modern era has produced some of the most significant moments in college football history. The 2011 regular season meeting saw No. 1 LSU defeat No. 2 Alabama in overtime, setting up a historic 2012 BCS National Championship Game—the first time two teams from the same conference and division met for the title. That game also produced the first shutout in the 14-year history of the BCS bowl system. However, this yearly tradition is set to change; starting in 2026, the SEC's new nine-game schedule will interrupt their annual meeting until at least 2030.
