How a versatile playmaker rewrote the record books for Washington
In short: Antonio Gibson's ability to master multiple roles made him a rare asset in the NFL. From his standout years at Memphis to a historic Thanksgiving performance, he proved that versatility is a weapon that can overwhelm even the most disciplined defenses.
Antonio Gibson's journey to the NFL was defined by his multi-dimensional skill set. After playing football, basketball, and track at Eagle's Landing High School in Georgia, he enrolled at East Central Community College in 2016. During his two years there, he demonstrated his utility by recording 871 receiving yards and 554 kick-return yards, alongside 249 rushing yards. In 2018, he transferred to the University of Memphis, where he became only the fourth player in American Athletic Conference history to earn conference honors at two different positions, serving as both a return specialist and a wide receiver.
Drafted by the Washington Football Team in the third round (66th overall) of the 2020 NFL draft, Gibson made an immediate impact. His versatility was a key factor for team executives during the selection process. He achieved a historic milestone on Thanksgiving in 2020, becoming the first rookie to score three touchdowns on that day since Randy Moss in 1998. He was also the first running back to rush for over 100 yards and three touchdowns on Thanksgiving since Barry Sanders in 1997.
Gibson's career has been marked by significant statistical milestones and physical challenges. He was the first Washington rookie since Alfred Morris in 2012 to record 1,000 yards from scrimmage. In 2021, he became the third player in franchise history to reach 1,000 rushing yards within his first two seasons, joining Morris and quarterback Robert Griffin III. Despite setbacks, including a torn ACL in 2025, Gibson has remained a consistent threat in both rushing and receiving roles throughout his professional career.
