The brilliant, volatile genius who redefined the Italian term for bad behavior
In short: He was a footballing prodigy with the technical grace of a master, yet his temper was so legendary it birthed a new word. From the streets of Bari to the heights of Real Madrid, Antonio Cassano’s career was a whirlwind of unmatched skill and explosive conflict.
Born in 1982 in the Bari Vecchia neighborhood, Antonio Cassano rose from poverty to become one of Italy's most gifted forwards. Known by nicknames like 'Fantantonio' and 'the jewel of Old Bari,' his technical ability was undeniable. However, his career was frequently defined by 'cassanata'—a term coined by his former coach, Fabio Capello, in 2002 to describe behavior incompatible with team spirit.
His journey took him through the elite of European football, including high-profile stints at Roma, Real Madrid, and AC Milan. At Roma, he was the most expensive teenage signing ever, moving for 60 billion Italian lire in 2001. While at Real Madrid, his time was marked by both success and struggle, including a period where poor eating habits led to fines for being over his playing weight.
Despite his volatility, Cassano achieved significant milestones. He won league titles in both Italy and Spain and represented the Italian national team 39 times between 2003 and 2014. He even shared the record for Italy's top scorer in the UEFA European Championships with Mario Balotelli, both having netted three goals in the tournament.
His later years saw him move between clubs like Sampdoria, Inter Milan, and Parma, often amidst contract disputes or disciplinary issues. Even as his career wound down, his impact remained, evidenced by his ability to find form in unexpected places, such as scoring his 100th Serie A goal for Parma in late 2013.
