The 1740 mystery of the Rooswijk and its waterlogged treasure chests
In short: When a Dutch East India Company trading ship vanished in 1740, it left behind a trail of letters washing ashore on the English coast. Now, archaeologists are diving into the wreckage off Kent to uncover whether the ship's legendary silver is still trapped inside centuries-old wooden chests.
In January 1740, the Rooswijk set sail for Jakarta, carrying a cargo intended for the lucrative spice and porcelain trades. The vessel, part of the Dutch East India Company's vast fleet, disappeared during its voyage. The English government only realized the ship had met a disaster off the coast of Kent when passengers' personal letters and items began washing up on the shore. Tragically, all nearly 250 people aboard the ship perished in the sinking.
Recent large-scale excavations led by Historic England have brought the 277-year-old wreck into focus. Marine archaeologist Alison James and her team are investigating several waterlogged chests, the largest of which measures approximately one meter in length. To protect these fragile artifacts, researchers plan to use x-ray scanners rather than prying them open, which could cause destruction. While silver coins were recovered during 2005 excavations, the contents of the remaining chests remain a mystery; they could hold anything from sword blades to silver ingots.
Beyond the search for wealth, the site offers a rare window into 18th-century maritime life. Archaeologists have recovered pewter jugs, spoons, glass bottles, shoes, and ornately carved knife handles. While only 11 passengers have been identified so far, these personal belongings provide vital clues about the crew's trading practices and daily existence. The expedition was prompted by the need to protect the site from thieves, as shifting sands and currents threatened to expose the remains to looters.
