In short: Ariela Barer’s career trajectory is a masterclass in artistic evolution. After beginning as a child performer on Nickelodeon, she transitioned into a versatile actress and filmmaker, eventually producing a critically acclaimed ecological thriller that captured international attention and earned a spot on prestigious year-end film lists.

Born in Los Angeles in 1998 to Mexican-born Jewish parents, Barer's artistic roots are deeply embedded in her family. A classical composer is her father, whereas her mother, a writer and visual artist, contributed to a well-known Mexican comedy radio show. This creative lineage paved the way for Barer's early entry into the industry in 2007, where she appeared as a child actor on Nickelodeon's Yo Gabba Gabba! and later guest-starred on long-running dramas like ER and 90210.

The turning point in Barer's career arrived between 2017 and 2019. During this period, she gained significant visibility through recurring roles in One Day at a Time and Atypical, as well as a breakout performance in the Hulu series Marvel's Runaways. She also demonstrated her range by starring in Ladyworld, an all-female adaptation of William Golding's Lord of the Flies, which screened at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Barer's most significant recent achievement is her work on the 2023 film How to Blow Up a Pipeline. Collaborating with director Daniel Goldhaber, she co-wrote, produced, and starred in the narrative adaptation of Andreas Malm's non-fiction book. The project took 19 months to complete from conception to its 2022 world premiere. The film was a critical success, earning a 95% score on Rotten Tomatoes and being named one of the year's best films by The Guardian.

Currently based in New York City, Barer continues to expand her portfolio. She joined the cast of the HBO series The Last of Us in 2024 as Mel, a role that earned her critical acclaim and a promotion to series regular for the third season in 2026. Beyond her screen work, she is a queer artist who previously fronted the Los Angeles punk band The Love-Inns.
