The youngest MVP in Malaysian history is rewriting football records
In short: Arif Aiman didn't just join the elite; he shattered the timeline of achievement. At just 19 years old, he became Malaysia's youngest-ever Most Valuable Player, a feat that signaled the arrival of a winger capable of dismantling some of Asia's most formidable defenses.
Arif Aiman’s trajectory from discovery to dominance is a study in rapid development. Identified during the Mykids programme in 2011/12, he moved through the National Football Development Programme (NFDP) and eventually joined Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT). His rise was marked by a strategic move in late 2018 to leave the Mokhtar Dahari National Football Academy for JDT’s academy, seeking more playing opportunities. This transition proved pivotal, allowing him to climb through every level of the club—from JDT IV to becoming a first-team regular.
His impact on the national stage was immediate and historic. In 2021, at age 19, he won the National Football Awards MVP, surpassing Safawi Rasid, who held the previous record at 21. His versatility has been equally striking; while he earned 'Best Striker' titles in 2021, 2022, and 2023, he was later recognized as 'Best Midfielder' for the 2024–25 season. This adaptability allowed him to contribute across various roles, from scoring a first-half hat-trick against Selangor in 2023 to recording a hat-trick of assists during a dramatic 4–3 comeback win against Kyrgyzstan in late 2023.
On the continental stage, Arif has become a pioneer for Malaysian football. In September 2024, he became the first Malaysian ever to score in the AFC Champions League Elite, netting an opener with his weak foot against Shanghai Port. His ability to perform under pressure is well-documented: he secured qualification for the knockout stages in 2022 by forcing an own goal against Ulsan Hyundai and has consistently appeared in the Malaysia Super League Team of the Season since 2021. By April 2025, he solidified his legacy by winning the league's MVP award for a record-breaking fourth consecutive season.
