How a bullied student transformed from a common craftsman into a world-conquering powerhouse
In short: Hajime Nagumo was just a bullied high schooler until a divine betrayal left him for dead in a lethal dungeon. Instead of succumbing, he evolved by consuming monster flesh, turning his basic alchemy into a weapon of war. This is the story of his brutal, uncompromising climb to the top.
Arifureta: From Commonplace to World's Strongest began as a web novel on the Shōsetsuka ni Narō platform in 2013, written by Ryo Shirakome. The narrative follows Hajime Nagumo, who is transported to a fantasy realm alongside his classmates. While his peers receive powerful magical abilities, Hajime is granted only Synergy, a basic alchemical skill typically reserved for smiths. After being betrayed by a classmate and left to die in a dungeon, he loses an arm and is forced to survive by feasting on monster flesh. This desperate act alters his physical appearance and personality, hardening him into a ruthless protagonist who abandons his former life to conquer the world's Great Labyrinths.
The series subverts traditional genre tropes by forcing its hero to earn his strength through grit rather than receiving it as a gift. Critics like Rebecca Silverman have noted this as a refreshing twist, though some have questioned the healthiness of the relationships depicted within the story. The franchise expanded significantly beyond its web novel origins, spawning a print light novel series illustrated by Takayaki, a prequel series titled Arifureta Zero, and multiple manga adaptations. By the first half of 2017, the series had already established itself as a commercial success, ranking as the 27th best-selling light novel series with over 84,000 copies sold.
The transition to animation proved turbulent. An initial anime adaptation, announced in 2017, faced significant delays and staff overhauls, including a change in directors and animation studios. When the first season finally aired in 2019, it received sharp criticism for poor animation quality and narrative pacing. Despite these production hurdles, the franchise continued to grow, eventually spanning three seasons that concluded in early 2025. The story’s evolution from a niche web novel to a multi-media juggernaut—including drama CDs, OVAs, and browser games—highlights the enduring appeal of Hajime’s dark, transformative journey against the tyrant god Ehit.
