From colonial militia to modern border guardians, the evolution of Malta’s military forces
In short: The Armed Forces of Malta trace their lineage back to 1800, evolving from British-led colonial infantry into a specialized brigade-sized organization. Today, this professional force serves as the primary guardian of the European Union's southernmost border, balancing territorial defense with modern aerial surveillance and high-tech special operations capabilities.
The modern Armed Forces of Malta (AFM) emerged in 1974 when the nation became a republic, transforming the 1st Regiment Royal Malta Artillery into the core of the new military structure. This transition followed centuries of military history, including the 1800 formation of the Maltese Light Infantry and the 1889 establishment of the Royal Malta Artillery. Throughout the 20th century, various units like the King's Own Malta Regiment served under British colonial lists before being integrated into the Malta Land Force upon independence in 1964.
Currently, the AFM operates as a professional force without conscription, relying on volunteers aged 18 to 30. As of 2017, the force comprised approximately 1,950 active personnel and 180 reservists. The organization is structured into three main regiments, supported by specialized air and maritime components. The 1st Regiment handles infantry and territorial defense, while the 3rd Regiment provides critical engineering, explosive ordnance disposal, and logistical support. The Air Wing and Maritime Squadron are essential for patrolling territorial waters and conducting search and rescue missions.
A significant modernization phase is currently underway, backed by a national security investment exceeding €10 million. This initiative focuses on infrastructure upgrades at Luqa Barracks, the acquisition of new helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft, and the establishment of a new Special Operations Unit. Recent developments also include a 2025 sectoral agreement to improve personnel conditions and the recruitment of 88 new soldiers in early 2026. These efforts ensure the AFM remains equipped to address evolving regional challenges while maintaining its role in border control and national security.
