The rise, fall, and scandal of Germany's most famous yo-yo club
In short: From winning West German championships in the 1920s to being forcibly relegated for match-fixing, Arminia Bielefeld has experienced the extreme highs and lows of football. Known as a 'Fahrstuhlmannschaft,' this club's history is a dizzying cycle of promotion, relegation, and financial survival.
Founded on May 3, 1905, by fourteen local bourgeois men, Arminia Bielefeld takes its name from the Cheruscan chieftain Arminius. The club's early decades were marked by significant silverware, including West German championships in 1922 and 1923. However, their prestige was later tarnished by the Bundesliga scandal. In the early 1970s, investigations revealed that Arminia was one of several clubs involved in match-fixing through bribery. The consequences were severe: two players received lifetime bans, and the club was denied a license and forcibly relegated at the end of the 1971–72 season.
The club earned the nickname 'Fahrstuhlmannschaft'—or elevator club—due to its frequent movement between divisions. This pattern includes periods of dominance, such as the 1979–80 season where they won 30 out of 38 matches and set a league record with an 11–0 victory over Arminia Hannover. Conversely, the club has faced deep instability, including a massive debt of 4.5 million Marks by 1987 and relegation to the third-tier 3. Liga in 2011.
Despite these fluctuations, the club maintains a strong identity at the Bielefelder Alm, their home since 1926. While they have struggled with financial burdens and stadium renovations, such as the construction of the East Stand, they have also been pioneers, hosting the first football match ever broadcast on German radio in 1925. Today, the club continues to navigate the tiers of German football, recently securing promotion to the 2. Bundesliga following the 2024–25 season.
