In short: When Arkansas left the Southwest Conference in 1991, it nearly severed a century of football history. The two schools didn't meet again until 2009, when they revived their feud as a neutral-site spectacle. Today, the rivalry is defined by a dramatic shift in power and a new era of SEC dominance.

The Arkansas–Texas A&M rivalry began in 1903, with the Aggies winning the inaugural 6–0 matchup. While both schools became charter members of the Southwest Conference in 1915, they didn't play annually until 1927. This period established a long history of conference competition that lasted until 1991, when Arkansas departed for the Southeastern Conference (SEC). This move created a 16-year hiatus where the two programs did not face one another on the gridiron.

The rivalry was resurrected in 2009 as the 'Southwest Classic,' a neutral-site game at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington. This era was marked by a significant shift in momentum; while Arkansas won the first reunion in 2009, Texas A&M has won 13 of the 14 games played since the Aggies joined the SEC in 2012. Notably, A&M secured the largest margin of victory in the series history—a 58–10 win—during their first meeting as SEC rivals in 2012.

The modern era is also defined by high-scoring drama and overtime finishes. Between 2014 and 2017, the series saw three overtime games in just four years, with Texas A&M winning all three. However, the future of the rivalry is shifting again. Due to the 2024 SEC expansion and the elimination of divisions, the two teams are no longer protected opponents, meaning they will no longer meet on an annual basis starting in 2025.

Historically, both programs have used this rivalry as a springboard to national titles. Texas A&M used a 27–0 victory in 1939 to secure an 11–0 record and a national championship, while Arkansas used a 17–0 win in 1964 to propel themselves to an 11–0 season and a national title by defeating Nebraska in the Cotton Bowl.
