In short: In 1975, Arkansas State achieved the impossible: an undefeated season in Division I football. Yet, despite a perfect record, they were denied a post-season bowl appearance. This incredible feat is one of only four such instances in the history of the sport.

The 1975 Arkansas State football season remains a statistical anomaly in college football history. While the team finished with a perfect 11–0 record, they were unable to participate in a bowl game. This occurred because, at the time, the program was a member of the Southland Conference, which lacked a formal bowl game tie-in. This specific inequity was so notable that it contributed to the eventual creation of the Independence Bowl in Shreveport, Louisiana. The team's 1975 achievement makes them one of only four institutions to ever go undefeated without winning a national championship at the Division I-A level. This era of the program was led by head coach Bill Davidson, who retired in 1978.

The program's history is marked by significant transitions, both in identity and competitive tier. Originally founded in 1911, the team played as the 'Indians' for nearly a century before officially changing its mascot to the Red Wolves in 2008. The school has navigated various levels of competition, from the National Junior College Athletic Association in the 1930s to the NCAA College Division, where they secured a national championship in 1970 under coach Bennie Ellender. The program's journey includes a period of competition in the NJCAA from 1937 to 1953. During the 1950s, under Forrest England, the team emerged as a regional power with four post-season bowl appearances.

The modern era has been characterized by both high-level success and coaching volatility. Between 2011 and 2013, the program experienced a period of remarkable on-field achievement despite constant turnover in the head coaching position. Coaches such as Hugh Freeze, Gus Malzahn, and Bryan Harsin all led the team to significant victories before departing for other major programs. Interestingly, all three of these influential coaches eventually went on to serve as the head coach of the Auburn Tigers. The program's recent history includes a 2016 conference title shared with Appalachian State. The current head coach, Butch Jones, was appointed in December 2020.
