From unranked recruit to Super Bowl champion: the rise of Arthur Jones
In short: Initially overlooked as a mere two-star recruit, Arthur Jones defied the odds through defensive dominance. After a standout collegiate career at Syracuse, he ascended to the NFL, eventually securing a Super Bowl ring with the Baltimore Ravens and establishing a powerful athletic legacy alongside his brothers, Jon and Chandler Jones.
Arthur Jones’s journey began far from the national spotlight. While playing for Union–Endicott High School, he was a standout in both football and wrestling, earning two New York state wrestling championships. Despite a senior season featuring 64 tackles and six sacks, recruiting services like Rivals.com only rated him as a two-star prospect, leaving him off the lists of the nation's best defensive tackle recruits.
His path to the professional ranks was forged at Syracuse University. After redshirting in 2005, Jones became a defensive force, earning first-team All-Big East honors in both 2008 and 2009. His ability to disrupt plays was evident in his career statistics, which rank him sixth on the Syracuse all-time list for tackles for loss. This collegiate success paved the way for the 2010 NFL Draft, where the Baltimore Ravens selected him in the fifth round with the 157th overall pick.
In the NFL, Jones transitioned from a 4-3 defensive tackle to a 3-4 defensive end. His career reached its pinnacle during the 2012 season, when he helped lead the Ravens to a 34–31 victory over the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl XLVII. During that championship game, he recorded a critical sack on quarterback Colin Kaepernick and a fumble recovery. Following his time in Baltimore, Jones played for the Indianapolis Colts—signing a five-year, $30 million contract in 2014—and later the Washington Redskins.
Beyond the field, Jones was part of a formidable athletic family; his brothers include UFC champion Jon Jones and NFL veteran Chandler Jones. Tragically, Jones passed away on October 3, 2025, at the age of 39. His death prompted an emergency response in Pompey, New York, after a home defibrillator was activated.
